Teens Only Ask a Question Parents Resources

My girlfriend keeps trying to tell me that it`s okay to have unprotected sex during the week before her period starts. Is this true? Is the risk of pregnancy any different at any time during the menstruation cycle? Also, are there any things that can make her period late other than pregnancy? Such as having sex after months of abstinence, or other things like that? Any answers you can give me regarding these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Dear Joshua,

Yes, there are times in a menstrual cycle where there is greater likelihood of pregnancy. The problem is that a female can become pregnant ANY time during her cycle when unprotected vaginal intercourse takes place. And no, the week before her period does not offer any protection against pregnancy.

And even though you didn't ask, anytime unprotected intercourse takes place, an STD can be transmitted from an infected partner to the other.
