Teens Only Ask a Question Parents Resources

My girlfriend has always had very inconsistent and irregular periods. She didn't have her first one until she was nearly 17, and since then they have been sporadic and follow no pattern, usually coming many months apart. My question is, if she last had her period 6 or 7 months ago, could she become pregnant.

Dear B,

Yes, a pregnancy is possible. A female can ovulate without having a menstrual flow, not to mention that if she engages in unprotected intercourse, open to STD infection.

We would suggest that she visit with her doctor to discuss how to regulate her cycle. At this age, irregular cycles could indicate a problem (but not necessarily.)
